05Achieving Emotional Balance

As the weeks passed I moved step by step towards a more balanced life. I had learned to confront negative thoughts with CBT and to handle deep emotions with DBT. Still, something was missing: the sense of stability and harmony I had been seeking from the start.

One day, sitting in the garden enjoying the breeze, I asked myself: how do I combine everything I have learned to reach balance? How do I stay steady whether my feelings are intense or my thoughts are troubling?

Balancing Reason and Emotion

I realised that balance does not mean getting rid of negative feelings or thoughts entirely, but being able to deal with them in a healthy way when they appear. Life is full of ups and downs, and strong feelings are sometimes unavoidable, but balance means facing them without being carried away.

I remembered a DBT concept, the wise mind: combining rational thinking and emotion so that I am captive to neither; I do not let emotions push me into hasty decisions, nor ignore my feelings and rely on logic alone.

Wise mind: where logical thinking meets feeling, and neither holds the other captive.Wise mind: where logical thinking meets feeling, and neither holds the other captive.
Wise mind: where logical thinking meets feeling, and neither holds the other captive.

I tried this in daily life. Whenever I faced a problem at work or in a relationship I paused and asked: “What am I feeling right now? And what is my mind telling me?” I always tried to find the balance between the two instead of leaning to one side.

Controlling Reactions: The Key to Balance

One day a colleague made a mistake on a joint project that cost the company a great deal. I felt anger and frustration, but remembered my lessons.

Instead of exploding or suppressing my feelings, I combined both approaches: I took a deep breath to calm down, then thought about the situation clearly, focusing on how to fix it and prevent a repeat rather than on the mistake itself.

When I spoke with him I was measured; I expressed my feelings clearly without anger or blame. It was a turning point: I had not only handled the situation effectively but felt inner peace, because I had mastered my feelings and thoughts and made an informed decision.

Continuing to Learn and Grow

I discovered that emotional balance is not a fixed state reached once, but a continuous process of learning and development; every day brings new challenges, and I have to be ready to use my tools continually.

So I kept practising mindfulness daily, even in calm moments, to stay aware of my feelings and thoughts, and I reviewed my negative thoughts regularly, challenging them when they appeared.

Balancing Work and Personal Life

One of the most important things I sought to balance was the relationship between work and personal life. Work took much of my time and energy and affected my family and social relationships.

So I set clear boundaries between them and dedicated daily time to myself and my family, free from work pressure and thoughts of projects.

It was a simple step, but it changed a lot: I felt more content with my family and became more productive at work, because I was giving each side its due.

Your Lord has a right over you, your soul has a right over you, and your family has a right over you; so give each its due.

Over time I felt I was reaching the balance I had long sought. Strong feelings and negative thoughts no longer controlled me as before. At the end of one day I sat on my balcony watching the sunset with a new feeling inside: peace and stability.

Perfection was not my goal; my goal was a more balanced life, at peace with myself and others. The journey was not over, but it was heading in the right direction.

In Today’s World

Hybrid work and smartphones have dissolved the boundary between office and home. Set clear digital boundaries: hours when work messages are not opened, meals without screens, and prayer times no notification may interrupt. A boundary that is not written down and announced will not hold.
