Chapter 5
05Overcoming Challenges with Creativity
Just as I began enjoying the balance I had achieved, life brought new challenges, but this time I was ready to meet them with a different mindset; I had learned that challenges are not obstacles but opportunities for creative solutions.
One day I faced a big problem in my project: an unexpected funding obstacle, and conventional solutions were not working. I felt frustrated, but instead of giving in to worry I decided to apply the creative methods I had learned.
Reframing the Challenge
The most powerful way to overcome a challenge is to reframe it: not an impossible problem but an opportunity to grow. Instead of asking “Why is this happening to me?” I ask “What can I learn from this?
How can I benefit from it?” I focus on what I can control, and turn the obstacle into a goal to pursue rather than a barrier to avoid.
If you are passed over for a promotion, for example, make it a chance to assess your strengths and what needs developing, seek feedback, then apply again with more confidence and preparation.
Brainstorming and Thinking Outside the Box
I gathered my team for an unconventional brainstorming session whose first rule was: there is no wrong answer, and every idea, however impractical, goes on the table.
Everyone put forward ideas, some funny or unrealistic, and gradually they took shape; we found that combining unconventional ideas led to innovative solutions we had never considered.
One idea was crowdfunding to gain community support for the project; it was new to me, and I realised that technology today opens unconventional sources of finance, provided their structures are Shari‘ah-compliant, such as partnership, donation or murabahah, far from interest-bearing loans.

- The Five Whys: Ask “why?” five times in a row to reach the root of the problem rather than its symptoms.
- Mind mapping: Put the challenge in the centre and branch out with obstacles, ideas and possible solutions to see connections that were not obvious.
- SCAMPER: Substitute, combine, adapt, modify, put to another use, eliminate, rearrange.
Exercise: SCAMPER a Current Challenge
Choose a challenge you face now, answer each of the seven SCAMPER questions in writing, then review the list and pick the two most promising ideas to try this week.
Creativity in Daily Details
Creativity was not only for big problems, so I applied it to the details of my daily work.
When my team fell behind on delivering another project, instead of overtime and pressure I changed how we worked: we split the project into small tasks and worked on them together at the same time, which was faster and more efficient.
And instead of long, dull meetings I began running short, interactive sessions that let everyone raise ideas and problems flexibly.
Resilience and Iteration
Resilience is not being unbreakable but bending without breaking: embracing change, adopting a growth mindset, and staying present and calm.
One of creativity’s principles is iteration: treating your solutions as prototypes to be tested and improved, learning from failure, and celebrating every small step.
If you want to build a new skill, start with small projects and work up to larger ones.
Overcoming Self-Doubt with Creativity
Despite the progress, moments of doubt crept in: would these unconventional methods work in the long run?
Instead of letting doubt take over, I made it an opportunity for more creativity; I wrote down my doubts and negative thoughts and met them with a question: “If the project fails, how can I turn that failure into a chance to learn, or to succeed another way?”
I discovered that doubt is not necessarily an enemy; it can be a spur to look for new solutions.
A Support Network and Staying True to the Vision
Creativity and resilience are not solo efforts; mentors, friends and family offer encouragement and new perspectives, and group brainstorming produces ideas you would never reach alone, for “the believer to the believer is like a building whose parts support one another.”
When challenges intensify, return to your written vision, break the challenge into small goals, and picture the fruit of success.
Over time creativity was no longer a tool I used to solve problems but a way of life.
I began looking at every situation from a new angle; I did not fear failure but welcomed it as part of learning, and I grew more optimistic about the future, for whatever challenges lie ahead I have the tools and the flexibility, and before them, trust in Allah.
In Today’s World
Crowdfunding and digital investment platforms have multiplied, and so have fraud and non-compliant structures. Before any financing ask: does it involve riba or gharar? Turn to Shari‘ah boards and licensed platforms; a little that is halal and blessed is better than much that is doubtful.
