Story 08 · Between Us
8Maya and Zoe

Maya and Zoe, two university students, moved into a shared flat near campus. They were excited, but quickly discovered they had very different lifestyles. So they decided to use a few tools for getting along:
Taking turns. When they decorated the living room, they took turns choosing: Maya chose the table, Zoe chose the curtains, and so on.
“They didn’t just avoid conflict; they built a solid foundation of understanding and respect.”
Both at once. Maya liked late-night films, and Zoe liked morning yoga. They agreed Maya would use headphones after ten, and Zoe would start her exercises after eight.
Cutting the cake. They divided chores by preference: Maya cleaned the bathroom, and Zoe cooked.
Personal preference. Maya loved spicy food, and Zoe preferred Mediterranean flavours. Whoever cooked, cooked her own way.
Half and half. They agreed to split the grocery bills equally.
A trial period. They tried quiet hours from eleven at night to seven in the morning, and after a week adjusted them to midnight until eight.
Meeting in the middle. Maya liked it cool, and Zoe liked it warm, so they set the air conditioning somewhere in between.
Splitting the difference. When they wanted to buy something for the flat, Maya suggested five hundred, Zoe thought three hundred was enough, and they agreed on four hundred.
Over time, they didn’t just avoid conflict; they built a solid foundation of understanding and respect, and their flat became a haven of peace, cooperation and memories.
