6Facing the Big Challenges

Despite all the progress Fawzooz had made toward emotional balance, life, as usual, brought a new challenge, one he hadn’t expected. He knew balance didn’t mean the end of challenges, but he wasn’t fully prepared for what came next.
One day Fawzooz received an unexpected phone call. On the other end was his brother, his voice full of worry. He told him a close family member had been in a serious accident and was in a critical condition. The words fell like sudden rain, flooding Fawzooz’s heart with fear and worry. He couldn’t believe what he was hearing; he felt the ground had collapsed beneath his feet. His emotions surged quickly, from shock to fear to grief. But despite the intensity of the feelings exploding inside him, he had an inner awareness that he needed to hold together. This was the real test of everything he had learned from CBT and DBT.
“True strength is not in avoiding pain, but in meeting it with resilience and patience.”
Emotional regulation in a crisis
Facing this kind of crisis, Fawzooz’s emotions surged in a way that was hard to control. But instead of letting them push him to collapse, he decided to apply one of the most important DBT techniques he had learned: crisis survival. He took a deep breath and focused on the present moment. He knew he couldn’t change what had happened, but he could control how he responded. He decided to use the DBT technique of “radical acceptance”. Instead of resisting and denying reality, he decided to accept the situation as it was, however painful. He sat quietly for a few minutes, focusing on his breath and holding the thought that life is full of challenges we cannot control.
Those moments of reflection helped him regain a little balance, and reminded him that stability doesn’t mean the absence of pain, but the ability to meet it with resilience.
Facing intense emotions
As the days passed, grief and sorrow deepened. Fawzooz felt weak, and sadness took over every part of his life. He knew these feelings had to be handled carefully, and he had the tools to do it. He began practising another DBT technique known as “self-soothing skills”, ways of calming oneself physically and emotionally during hard moments. One day, when sadness weighed heavily on him, he went for a walk in the park. The fresh air and birdsong helped calm him and ease the sadness a little. He also used CBT to challenge the negative thoughts that came to him.
When thoughts such as “I won’t be able to get through this” or “Life has lost its meaning” came, he paused and asked himself: “Are these thoughts true?” He knew that real pain does not necessarily mean life has lost its meaning.
Social support
Although Fawzooz usually relied on himself, he realised social support is essential in hard times. He had learned from DBT that asking others for help isn’t weakness, but part of facing a crisis. He began reaching out to close friends and family. He talked with his brother about his feelings and how he was coping. He wasn’t looking for solutions, only for someone to listen and understand what he was going through. Connecting with others helped him feel he wasn’t alone in this battle.
Learning from pain
As the weeks went by, Fawzooz began to realise that this crisis, despite the pain it caused, had taught him something new about himself. He discovered that true strength is not the ability to avoid pain, but the ability to meet it with resilience and patience. Challenges like this were what helped him grow as a person.
He also learned that emotional balance doesn’t necessarily mean being permanently at peace, but being able to face pain without collapsing, and keeping hope for tomorrow even in the darkest moments.
Fawzooz was no longer the same person he had been at the start of the story. He had been through an experience that changed his life, but it had also taught him a great deal. He was now more aware of his emotional capacities, and better able to face future challenges. He sat on his balcony again, watching the sky take on the colours of sunset. The pain hadn’t completely disappeared, but he had learned how to live with it. He knew life is full of ups and downs, but with every new challenge he had the tools he needed to keep his balance. This challenge was a new beginning, a new chapter in Fawzooz’s life, full of hope and strength, and a deep belief that emotional balance is not a fixed state but an ongoing journey.
