5Achieving Emotional Balance

As the weeks passed, Fawzooz felt he was moving step by step toward a more balanced life. He had learned to face his negative thoughts with CBT and to handle deep emotions with DBT. But despite all his progress, he still felt something was missing: the sense of stability and emotional harmony he had been seeking from the start. One day, sitting in the garden enjoying the breeze, he began thinking about how to combine everything he had learned to achieve emotional balance. How could he stay balanced in every moment, whether his feelings were strong or his thoughts troubling?
How could he live a life in which he could face challenges without losing control?
“Balance means facing emotions without being swept away by them.”
Seeking balance between reason and emotion
Fawzooz began to realise that balance doesn’t mean getting rid of emotions or negative thoughts completely, but being able to deal with them in a healthy way when they appear. He knew life is full of ups and downs and that strong emotions are sometimes unavoidable, but balance means facing them without being swept away. He remembered a DBT concept about “integrating reason and emotion”: learning to combine rational thinking and emotion so you are a prisoner of neither. In other words, he shouldn’t let his emotions push him into hasty decisions, nor ignore his feelings and rely only on logic.
Fawzooz decided to try this approach in daily life. When he faced a problem at work or in his relationships, he paused and asked himself: “What am I feeling right now? And what is my mind telling me?” He always tried to find the balance between what he felt and what he thought, rather than leaning to one side.
Managing reactions: the key to balance
One day Fawzooz found himself in a difficult situation at work. A colleague had made a mistake on a shared project, costing the company a great deal. Fawzooz felt angry and frustrated, but he remembered his lessons. Instead of exploding at his colleague or bottling up his feelings, he decided to use DBT and CBT together. He took a deep breath and used deep breathing to calm himself. Then he thought about the situation clearly. Instead of focusing on the mistake, he thought about how to fix things and what could be done to avoid repeating it. When he spoke to his colleague, he was balanced, expressing his feelings clearly but without anger or blame.
That moment was a turning point for Fawzooz. Not only had he handled the situation effectively, he felt inner peace, because he had managed his emotions and thoughts and made an informed decision.
Continuing to learn and grow
Emotional balance, as Fawzooz discovered, wasn’t a fixed state to be reached once. It was a continuous process of learning and growth. He realised every day brings new challenges, and he had to be ready to use his tools again and again. He decided to keep practising mindfulness daily, even when he felt calm, which helped him stay aware of his feelings and thoughts. He also reviewed his negative thoughts regularly, using CBT to analyse and challenge them when they appeared.
Balancing work and personal life
One area where Fawzooz sought balance was between his work and personal life. He felt work was taking too much of his time and energy, harming his family and social relationships. He decided to set clear boundaries between work and personal life, so he could enjoy time with friends and family without thinking about work. He began setting aside daily time for himself and his family, free from work pressure or thoughts of projects. It was a simple step, but it changed a lot. He felt more content and at ease with his family, and became more productive at work because he gave time to each part of his life in a balanced way.
Over time, Fawzooz felt he was beginning to achieve the balance he had long sought. Strong emotions and negative thoughts no longer controlled him as before. He had learned that life isn’t always easy, but it is full of challenges that can be met with awareness and calm.
At the end of the day, Fawzooz sat on his balcony watching the sunset. He felt something new inside him: a sense of peace and stability. Perfection wasn’t his goal; the goal was to live a more balanced and peaceful life with himself and others. He knew the journey wasn’t over, but it was heading in the right direction.
