A drawing from the story “Freedom from Clutter”

Fawzooz woke recalling the Prophet’s words, peace be upon him: “Reflect on God’s creation, and do not reflect on the essence of God.” He had set this day aside to learn how to order his thoughts and reduce mental clutter by applying new techniques. He began with the dawn prayer, followed by a short session of reflection, focusing on seeking forgiveness, breathing deeply and letting his mind settle and shed its daily concerns. He drew inspiration from Qur’anic verses that call for reflection and contemplation, using remembrance of God to calm his heart and clear his mind.

During the day, Fawzooz used tools such as journaling to record his thoughts and feelings, which helped him identify his priorities and organise his day more effectively. He learned the importance of identifying troubling thoughts and dealing with them in an organised way, using the principle of “give everything its due” to give each thought its proper time and place. By the end of the day he felt great relief and much greater clarity in his thinking. He noticed he could handle everyday situations more calmly and with more focus, and he felt an improvement in his mental wellbeing, which helped him appreciate the present moment more without worrying about the future or regretting the past.

“Organising our thoughts and dealing with our concerns methodically creates a calm, focused mental space, strengthening mental health and helping us face daily challenges more effectively, deepening our contentment and gratitude for life.”

Fawzooz learned that organising his thoughts not only improves focus, but improves overall mental health. He discovered the importance of keeping a daily routine with time set aside to order his thoughts and feelings, seeing this as part of his worship and his drawing near to God. So Fawzooz closed his twenty-fourth day with a prayer and thanks, aware that inner peace and clarity of mind are among God’s blessings, to be carefully preserved.
