A drawing from the story “Smile, and Speak Kindly”

As the sunlight sparkled and he read verses of the Qur’an, Fawzooz prepared for his twelfth day full of determination to apply new principles of effective communication and positive influence. He began his day with a radiant smile, remembering the Prophet’s saying, peace be upon him: “Your smile in your brother’s face is charity.” He put the principles he had learned into practice sincerely. He listened closely to everyone who spoke to him, showing genuine interest in what they said and sharing their views and feelings, in keeping with God’s words: “And speak to people kindly.” In conversation he made good use of people’s names, knowing that every name has a special music in its owner’s ear, reflecting a respect that goes beyond words to the heart, as Islam commands good conduct and honouring others.

As his relationships improved, Fawzooz began to see the value of positive communication and its effect on those around him, taking the life of the Prophet as the highest example of mercy, gentleness and understanding. He found that relationships are not just social equations, but chances to influence and change things for the better. By the end of the day, Fawzooz realised that true influence comes from the heart and is rooted in good character, and that every kind word and generous gesture builds bridges of affection that withstand the trials of time. So, at the close of this day of his journey, Fawzooz knew that the key to positive influence in life lies in sincerity, kindness and mercy, the pillars on which a better world for all is built.

“A smile and a kind word are not mere social exchanges, but bridges of affection that root relationships and deepen positive influence; a sincere heart and good intention are the key to a more compassionate world.”
