5The Brainstorming Session

1 min read7 of 13

A drawing: the villagers sit at night under a string of lights, and Fawzooz raises his hand among glowing ideas

After his success with design thinking, Fawzooz wanted to awaken creativity across his whole community. He organised a large brainstorming session around the village’s new challenges: improving footpaths and expanding places for recreation.

Everyone is invited. He invited all the residents, from the elderly to the young, stressing that every voice has value.

“No criticism at the start, and the bolder the idea, the better.”

The rules. No criticism in the first stage, every idea is welcome, and the bolder and stranger the idea, the better. Then he asked: how can we use our public spaces in new ways?

The flow of ideas. A young man suggested solar-lit paths for walkers and cyclists, an elder proposed community gardens on empty plots, and a mother imagined open-air theatre performances.

Choosing. Together they discussed the feasibility and impact of each idea, and chose those with broad support that could be carried out with the village’s resources.

The footpaths improved, community gardens sprang up, life in the village got better and its people grew closer. Fawzooz had shown that this simple method could release the energy of an entire community.
