Story 01 · Thinking Tools
1SCAMPER

After the success of the brainstorming and design-thinking sessions, Fawzooz discovered a new technique called SCAMPER, a creative-thinking tool that helps renew old ideas and turn them into fresh innovations. He realised it could be a great help with village projects that needed updating or reimagining.
Getting to know SCAMPER. SCAMPER is an acronym for a set of techniques: Substitute, Combine, Adapt, Modify, Put to another use, Eliminate, and Reverse or Rearrange. Each part encourages looking at things differently, sparking creativity and innovation.
“An old idea, seven questions, and a new birth.”
Applying SCAMPER in the village. Fawzooz decided to use SCAMPER to update local facilities, and the first project he chose was improving the village’s old recreation centre. He gathered a team of residents, and they began exploring how each part of SCAMPER could apply to the centre.
Substitute. The team suggested replacing the old furniture with eco-friendly pieces made from recycled materials.
Combine. They thought of combining the recreation centre with the village library to create a community space that brings learning and play together.
Adapt. Adapting the spaces to be more flexible, so they could host different cultural and educational events.
Modify. Modifying the interior design to reflect the village’s cultural heritage, adding traditional elements to the décor.
Put to another use. The idea of using the centre for evening workshops for adults and young people.
Eliminate. Removing unnecessary interior walls to create a larger, more open space.
Reverse or rearrange. They suggested rearranging the rooms to improve the flow of movement through the centre.
The results. Using SCAMPER, Fawzooz and his team transformed the old recreation centre into a lively community hub that met residents’ needs and hopes. The result was remarkable: the renovation increased use of the centre and strengthened social ties in the village.
Through this project, Fawzooz showed how SCAMPER can open the door to countless innovations, turning old ideas into new solutions that suit the times and meet changing needs.
