Story 03 · The Heart
3Repentance and Seeking Forgiveness

With every step of his spiritual journey, Fawzooz drew closer to God and felt a constant renewal in his heart and soul. Yet he realised there was another side, no less important than giving, prayer and fasting: repentance and seeking forgiveness. He knew that human beings err by nature, and that however hard one strives for obedience and goodness, there remains a need to repent and return to God asking for forgiveness. One night, as he sat quietly after the evening prayer, Fawzooz felt the weight of certain sins he had never paused over in daily life. There had been moments of weakness, moments of slackness in worship, and moments when perhaps he had not paid enough attention to his relationship with God.
He felt the time had come to begin a journey of sincere repentance, and to ask God’s forgiveness for the moments he had strayed from the straight path.
“Repentance is never the end of the road; it is always a new beginning.”
Fawzooz sat on his prayer mat and raised his hands in supplication: “O God, I seek Your forgiveness and turn to You in repentance for every sin I have committed, openly or in secret. I ask You, O God, to forgive my sins and pardon me, for You are the Forgiving, the Merciful.” His prayer came from the depths of his heart. It was not just words spoken, but genuine remorse and a real desire to set things right.
With every word he spoke, Fawzooz felt the weight he had carried begin to fade. Seeking forgiveness freed him from guilt and gave him a chance to renew himself and begin again. He knew that God loves those who repent, and that God has promised to forgive whoever returns to Him with a sincere heart.
Fawzooz began to make seeking forgiveness a regular part of his day. After every prayer he would repeat “Astaghfirullah”, I seek God’s forgiveness, three times. In quiet moments he set aside time to recall his mistakes, not to punish himself, but to ask forgiveness and become more aware of his actions and behaviour. He felt that seeking forgiveness was a kind of inner cleansing that kept his heart pure and close to God. He also realised that repentance is not limited to words; it must be accompanied by a sincere intention not to return to the sin. He began reviewing his conduct and relationships, trying to be more careful to avoid the mistakes he had made in the past. He kept correcting his course, striving to be someone who pleases God and lives by the values of Islam.
One day, reflecting on the importance of repentance, he remembered the story of the Prophet Adam, peace be upon him. He knew that God forgave Adam after he erred, and this made him understand that making mistakes is part of human nature; what matters is returning to God and asking forgiveness. The story inspired him to see repentance as a gift from God to His servants, a chance to renew their relationship with Him and begin again.
On long nights, Fawzooz would sit reflecting on his life, recalling every moment of weakness or straying, and asking God to help him correct his course. For him, repentance was not only a way to be rid of sins, but a way to redirect his life toward something better. He felt that every plea for forgiveness brought a new light into his life.
Over time, repentance became part of his daily spiritual routine. He did not wait until he had made a big mistake to ask forgiveness; he knew that people err constantly, and that daily repentance is a way to keep the heart pure and close to God. He felt that repentance brought him rest and inner peace, and made him stronger in the face of life’s temptations.
One day, talking with his friends about repentance and seeking forgiveness, he said: “Repentance isn’t only about the past. It’s a way to live the present and the future better. Whenever we make a mistake, we should return to God and ask Him to help us not repeat it. Repentance is a chance for constant renewal, a chance to become better every day.”
Repentance and seeking forgiveness became an essential part of Fawzooz’s spiritual life. He realised that God is always near and ready to forgive, and that repentance is never the end of the road, but always a new beginning. He knew that the journey of faith demands continual correction, and that every time he returned to God, he found inner peace and the strength to keep going.
