3The Regulatory Bridge: Converging Standards

2 min read4 of 9

To build a robust defense for the digital workforce, we must move beyond “wellness tips” and establish a governance framework based on international standards. The Cognitive Firewall maps the intersection of three key global frameworks.

3.1 ISO 45003:2021 · The Foundation of Psychological Health and Safety

  • Focus. A guidance document within ISO 45001:2018 for managing psychosocial risks: psychological health and safety at work.
  • Application. We use this guidance to manage “Work Pace and Intensity.” As AI accelerates output, ISO 45003 directs organizations to design work so that human cognitive limits, not the algorithm’s speed, set the pace. It also addresses “Isolation,” reducing the loneliness of remote, AI-assisted work.

3.2 ISO/IEC 42001:2023 · The Governance of AI Systems

  • Focus. Artificial Intelligence Management System (AIMS).
  • Application. We expand the definition of “AI Risk Assessment” to include “Psychological Harm” (e.g., anxiety, loss of agency). We also enforce “Human Oversight” to counter “Displacement Anxiety” by formally defining the human as the architect and the AI as the tool.

3.3 IEEE 7010-2020 · The Metrics of Wellbeing

  • Focus. A recommended practice for assessing the impact of autonomous and intelligent systems on human well-being (IEEE 7010-2020).
  • Application. This recommended practice allows us to move from “feeling” to “measuring.” We adopt specific metrics such as:
  • User Agency. Measuring the degree of control the human feels they have over the AI tool.
  • Competence. Measuring the user’s confidence in their own skills despite AI assistance.
