1Ethan and Aggression

A drawing from the story “Ethan and Aggression”

In a quiet town, Caroline and Ethan lived in a house that looked perfect from the outside: a white fence and roses along the path. But behind closed doors there was another story.

Every morning Ethan would talk excitedly about the day before, its small victories and joys. But Caroline belittled everything, focused on the negatives, and ignored every achievement he described. Whenever he needed her, she withdrew into herself and turned a cold back on him instead of warmth and understanding.

“Love should lift us up, not tear us apart.”

Insults and threats. Their arguments grew fiercer, and Caroline resorted to threats and hurtful words, blaming Ethan for every small mistake.

The weapon of guilt. Whenever Ethan gathered the courage to confront her about her behaviour, she made him feel guilty.

Changing the subject. Talking with her was like a maze; whenever he thought they were nearing a solution, she changed the subject.

Control. Then came the final straw: she took control of their money, monitored his phone and calls, and decided which friends he could see.

One evening, after yet another argument, Ethan went for a long walk to reflect on their relationship. He realised he had become a shadow of himself, always swaying with her moods. He knew that love should lift us up, not tear us apart, and that he deserved respect, kindness and understanding.

With the support of close friends and sessions with a therapist, he found the courage to leave the relationship. It wasn’t easy, but he knew he deserved better. In time he rebuilt his life, and recovered his joy, his passion and his self-respect.
