Story 07 · Making It Responsibly

7Responsible Programmers

A drawing from the story “Responsible Programmers”

Fawzooz said, “AI can do wonderful things, but it comes with a big responsibility. It’s important that we use it in ways that are ethical and safe.”

Lina asked, “What do you mean by responsibility?” He answered, “Thinking about how what we make affects people, and making sure it doesn’t hurt anyone.”

“The goal of AI is to improve our lives, and make the world a better place.”

Fairness. Fawzooz said, “Imagine a robot that recognises faces, but gets it wrong for some people because of the colour of their skin. That isn’t fair. So we test our programs on many different examples, and work with many different people, so our solutions are fair to everyone.”

Privacy. He said, “It’s also irresponsible to collect people’s information without their permission. That invades their privacy, and we must respect it.”

Mohamed said, “I want to be a responsible programmer who makes things that are fair and safe for everyone.” And Lina said, “And I’ll work hard to learn everything I need.”

Fawzooz smiled and said, “I’m proud of you both. And remember, the journey isn’t over; read, try small projects, and always stay curious. The goal of AI is to improve our lives, and make the world a better place.” From that day on, Mohamed and Lina knew their first journey was the beginning of many more adventures.

If you built a robot to help people, what would it do? Draw it here, write its name, and how it will be fair and safe for everyone.
